The Facts: Michael Jackson is set to star in a documentary film about his last moments in preparing for a concert tour whose name is now being used for the movie as well. This is It is set to be released Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Jackson was to perform in a series of sold out concert venues in London. His untimely death was a tragedy mourned by many fans world wide, and the movie captures practices, interviews and backstage footage for the concert that was not meant to be. The movie is directed by Kenny Ortega.

Tribute or Exploitation?

Movie star and friend Elizabeth Taylor has already expressed her great admiration for the movie, stating:

“It cements forever Michael’s genius in every aspect of creativity. He cradles each note, coaxes the music to depths beyond reality. I wept from pure joy at his God-given gift. I truly believe this film should be nominated in every category conceivable.”

But while she champions the late and great King of Pop, another group of fans over on This is Not It are claiming that Sony Pictures and AEG (promoters of the London concert) are attempting to cash in on MJ’s final moments. They are also claiming that the singer is portrayed as being a healthy performer when he was in fact a sickly man. It’s no secret that Jackson had numerous financial obligations to fulfill, and proceeds from his concert tour would have helped out greatly.

Enjoy the King

No matter how exploited MJ becomes, he was and is a hero to many. Don’t let the media circus deter you from enjoying the life and performances of one of the greatest showman to ever dance and sing on stage. So despite what anyone says, if the movie helps you to meditate on the greatness that was MJ’s performances (leaving aside his personal llife), it’s a movie you should see and enjoy.
