Adrien Brody vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Predators’

Adrien Brody is expected to star alongside Topher Grace and Danny Trejo in director Nimrod Antal’s upcoming Predators reboot. Robert Rodriguez is producing, and has mentioned in past interviews that he wants to make this as free from studio control as possible: In other words, a non-studio, studio movie, due out July 9, 2010.

Now if you’re a real guy movie fan, there’s no doubt the original Predator is in your DVD collection and is played at least a few times a year. Or, you watch it every time SpikeTV plays the movie. If you loved the original as much as I do, this is bad news. Brody is no Arnold and his crew looks in no way as badass as the crew Dutch came into the jungle with. Who can forget Mac, Dillon and Billy? Hell, even the skinny white guy with glasses who breaks his back on a log is more manly than Brody. Add to that the fact that Topher Grace is in negotiations to star in the film and you’ve got all the ingredients you need for a suck-fest not seen since the second Aliens vs. Predators movie.
Bad news indeed. If you had a group of intergalactic hunter-aliens on your tail, who would you want on your side, the Pianist or Conan the Barbarian?

Is it just me or is Danny Trejo getting played out? While the twin uzis sounds interesting, it seems as though Rodriguez is just attempting to build a brand with his ridiculous Machete character. It seems that he’s only thrown in there to add some legitimacy to an otherwise unimpressive cast.
How I Would Remake Predator
No matter how you slice it, Predator is a guy’s movie about the best warriors on earth taking on the best warriors from space. There should be big dudes with big guns, plenty of blood, a great music theme and lots of action. For the main character, my choice would be the Rock – Dwayne Johnson. He’s the only one who can match Arnold’s charisma and build, and he’s also sure to be a box-office draw. The cast from Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables seems much more of a fit for this movie, including Jet Li, Dolph Lungren, former UFC champion Antonio Nogueira, and a few more choice selections.

the theme is the same from the first Predator film which is decentralized—the focus isn’t on anything just dead reckoning super advanced warrior hunters involved in an uncertain ‘fate’ or something like that.
Anyways the cast of the expendables would be great —with Dolph lundgren.

Thanks for commenting. I hope the movie will rock as well as I’m a huge fan of the original – I’m just not feeling this cast compared to the Expendables cast. They’re much more reminiscent of the original cast.
I don’t agree with you guys, and I’m annoyed that you fanboys always act dissatisfied with every movie sequel one can imagine..
oh my god it’s Adrien Brody and he doesn’t look like Arnie and his crew does not look like Arnie’s crew blablabla.. So what ?! I tell you what, if you ask me, stagnation is decadent and stupid! Hell, then go and watch your Pred 1 DVD another 500 times, but why don’t you just wait until this new movie comes out? No one wants to hear about your disapointment. Actually comments like yours is a disappointment to the everyone who likes movies. Complaining without having seen anything; try not to be intolerant for new ideas, because imo that is what keeps entertainment alive. And NOT repeating the same shit over and over again. If you want to see muscles, go and buy a John Cena movie or whatever. I believe it is far more interesting to see someone battling a Pred who is even more at a disadvantage against it than Arnie was ( in a physical way ); he must be more clever and have ideas to survive, it even happens on another planet! That can be interesting!

I would never take offense to anything my readers have to say. I appreciate you stopping by and voicing your concerns with my views and I really do welcome it. You bring up several good points about having an open mind, and I have decided based on your comment alone to be more open to this movie.
It will be interesting to see your views on the movie once it comes out. Maybe you can do a quick post for the other readers sharing your reviews. Again, I’m just a movie fan and this is just a place to discuss opinions so please have fun with it!

Oh and it wasn’t Hawkins who “broke his back” it was PONCHO who by the way, got it in the gut not in the back. Robert Rodriguez also said, “No one can compete with Arnold, so I wanted something different.” but I will disagree with you on Topher Grace’s casting, Daffy Duck is more menacing than he is. Other than that, I think and HOPE this will be a bad ass reboot since the AVP movies gobbled balls.

Thanks for that Calvin, I posted the new trailer in this article as an update. I think the original Predator movie was a bit empty if you break down the plot, and that applies to most movies as well. The kicker is if they can pull it off. Like I said, I’m hoping the movie rocks but we’ll have to wait and see. As with any movie, the talking heads at studios often determine how a movie should be marketed, and they don’t always make the best decisions regarding trailers. They have to appeal to their demographic first and hopefully they’ll show more in upcoming trailers.
It’s a bit tricky with this genre to gauge what should be most important: substance or entertainment. I’ll be satisfied with a happy medium.
Hey guys, good blog, I’m really pumped for this movie too. I loved the first Predator and have been hoping they would back off the AVP thing and get back to the basics. I was excited for both AVP movies, but sadly, they blew monkey scrotch (Even know the second was much better than the first). I think the AVP adaptation is just a really tough movie to make successful (story-wise) because of it having to involve aliens, predators, AND humans. O well. On the other hand, i thought the preview looked pretty radical. When it comes to the new wave of remakes over the past couple years, I try not to compare the new movie to the old one, seeing as how they often seem to be very different in their own way. I’ve discovered that “remake” is not the right word, but rather “re-adaptation” is a word better suited. That being said, I definatly like Adrien Brody taking the lead role. Also, I agree with Rambo in that I’m sure there will be a clever and brainy side to his character, which may serve him better than a beastly set of biceps. I’m diggin Laurence Fishburne, but Topher Grace… not so much. I gave him a splinter of a chance when he played Venom, and that crashed and burned; so I’m definatly a little shaky if he’s gunna be playing a tough character stuck on a planet fighting predators. Im pumped to see Danny Trejo in action, and the rest of the cast looks legit too. Overall, I think (and hope) this movie will kick ass. Other than that, lets cross our fingers and hope the predator looks ultra-brutal.
P.S. One thing to say about comparing Arnie to Brody
As far as appearance goes, this is much more realistic than the 80’s “muscle bag” action hero. Think about who would win in a race running from a Predator, Arnie or Adrian? No question there. And plus, I wouldn’t say Brody looks too small or skinny… only when you compare him to Arnie.
You make some great points Zack. It seems the consensus here is that everyone is hoping the movie does well, despite the difference of opinions on casting. I have my fingers crossed for this and will keep updating the article as new trailers and news becomes available. Lawrence Fishburne is definitely a welcomed addition to any cast.

This movie was complete and utter shit. The predator is made of testosterone and lightning this is crap, brody cant pull off to be a hardass alien killer, the russian guy looked like he would start crying any minute and the woman love interest was just lame AND loveinterests have no place in this kinda movie, if i wanna watch crap like that i would go watch Bridges over madison county. Fuck me Brockback mountain was even more macho then this crap.
Only semi-interesting character was Edwin but he turned out to be a dissapointment too with his “oooh im a predator oooh im evil oooh” lame ass pussy would not stand 2 sec vs a predator.

Just saw the movie because my boyfriend realllly wanted to go. I kept an open mind….at first. Then I heard Adrien Brody talk and I just had to giggle because he sounded ridiculous! He was intentionally lowering his voice to be tough to the point where he sounds like the nerdy kid who moves to a new school and tries to change his persona. My boyfriend and I shared a quick “wtf?!” glance and got back to serious to try to enjoy the movie. Never quite got back into it though. And wth was up with the kid from “That 70’s show”? Not nearly enough explanation for his character.

Real soldiers aren’t muscular like Arnold Schwarzenegger. In reality, soldiers are tough but not huge, as the size makes them slow. Muscle power means nothing in an age of guns and explosions. The weapons do all the killing. All big muscles will do is make someone slower and an easy target.
Having seen the movie, Brody does a great job of portraying the role, and the characters are a lot more realistic than the muscle-bound sausage fest the first movie was.
Adrian Brody is a flamer and has the biggest nose in Hollywood. The Duke is absolutely correct. Yes, i did see this garbage with an open mind. what is it with everyone wanting to see Trejo, he’s a loser beaner who plays the exact same part in every movie including all three dusk till dawns???

Thanks for the comment! I didn’t think the movie could ever work on another planet. We need the location to be Earth to ground the story more or people can’t relate to it. I also agree that the story and Brody’s character have fizzled out at this point.

Ok I think we can all agree that the one thing that all the Predator sequels are lacking is a main character that can be Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s equal. It wasn’t his acting ability… it was pretty much because he was a ripped well trained major in the army that could very well be the ultimate man.. Mr. Universe.. who else? Of course Commando, Terminator, and Conan helped us connect with his character in predator considering those were hot movies and everyone looked up to Arnold. Why is it that hard for movie directors to understand?
I wouldnt suggest John Cena because hes just a wrestler with crappy movies. Maybe Dewayne Johnson could pull it off just because his movie history and how big he is. Jet li wouldnt fit the description of the character we would want to see… Hes too small.. We want to see someone that could put up the raw man power to slug it out with a predator. If the predator hit Jet li one time, Jet is done for.
Big name actors these days wouldnt join the cast just unless they went back to the drawing board and recreated the whole movie. Otherwise Christian Bale would sound good saying “you’re one ugly mother fucker.” I know hes not a big guy but we can connect better to his character because hes a great actor.
If directors insist to use a smaller man for the lead roll… i would say go with Bear Grylls. He knows how to survive in the jungle
Another thing… Every thing about this last movie was very apparent they were trying to make everything just like the first one… all the way down to the ending song. Just things they said… If you are a big predator 1 fan, then you sniffed that shit right out as soon as it happend. It just seemed so desperate to recreate a hit like the first one. What made the first Predator so good? It didnt go to extreme lengths to put in major sci fi graphics, it was raw. There was more than one story to the movie, Dillon set them up to help the cia and “cooked up a story and dropped the 6 of us into a meat grinder.” It showed the brute force of Arnold how he lifted the truck up just to set off a bomb in the middle of the camp even tho his grenade launcher could have accomplished the same trick. It shows that Arnolds team is the best they could find that the 6 of them can beat a whole force of south americans. The predator picks them off one at a time and it builds suspense. After Arnold figures out how to beat it shows all the cool setting up of traps…((now i know everyone my age was in their backyard setting up traps all over the place after seeing that shit)) Then arnold is the biggest smartest strongest man of his team and the whole back half of the movie is arnold turning the tables on that son of a bitch and getting his payback. The predator looks REAL. The Jaws open in a real manner. The mask doesnt look perfectly airbrushed. Then arnold beats hit by himself. The first Predator movie wasnt about Predators… It was about Arnolds Character beating an alien.
The same goes for the second predator with Danny Glover. It was a story within a story, he was a cop fighting gangs and the predator just shows up…
The Predators movie just picks actors and says they are the best fighters, just believe it. it dont show you why they were considered the best, it doesnt let you connect to the characters. The only character that i liked was the asian guy that kills that one predator… best part of the whole movie. JUST BECAUSE it shows his skill far more than the rest, people can assume hes good with the katana, its believable. It shows how he sinks in the mud with his shoes but he can stand on top of the mud with his bare feet, giving you the idea that hes “ninja like”.. I guarantee you that the asian guy was the most liked character of the new movie.
If they were to make a new predator movie I think it should take place in the middle east or an African jungle with a special opps team as the main characters. Have Dewayne Johnson as the main character. make them a rescue team that demolishes a whole group of terrorists or rebels and then let the predator slowly build suspense… Im sure theres a way to incorporate the Pyramids in Giza linked to aliens. You know the predators always around the heat and killing (WELL THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO) A lot of people can connect to the war over there… they connect to our soldiers… Maybe Jon Cena can play a roll as jessie ventura’s. As long as they let you connect to each character in their own way so you can feel bad when they die. “im gonna have me some fun… im gonna have me some fun”… Mac and blain were best friends that acted like they were immune to pain, like how blain got shot and didnt have time to bleed, or when mac cut him self shaving on purpose just to ease the tension. Hawkins told the stupid sex jokes and had the nerdy napolean dynamite glasses… poncho was the second in command and stayed right by arnolds side and was educated and sharp with his senses. Billy was the native american tracker that was really spiritual… They just spent a lot more time connecting you and describing each character in detail before you watch them die…
