2012 is when the world's supposed to end, but that won't stop movie studios from producing a whole lot of goodness.

Although the summer of 2010 hasn’t even come to a close yet, it’s never too early to look at what’s in store for us in 2012. Since it’s the last year EVER, it’s great that we have some great movies to look forward to. Don’t believe me? Read on…

Summer 2012 Guy Movie List

Here are some great guy movies you can all look forward to seeing in theaters.

Batman 3 – July 20, 2012: The sequel to the wildly successful film the Dark Knight is set to kick some ass at the box office. It’ll probably beat Avatar’s record. Okay, maybe I’m just getting too excited to see what Nolan can come up with.

Spider-Man – July 3, 2012: Not sure what Sony/Columbia is planning with the movie, but all things are pointing to a reboot. The script has been plagued with rewrites and there’s no clear direction in sight. Either way, I’ll look forward to seeing what the studios can do to get this franchise headed in the right direction. If I hear another “Batman Begins” treatment, I think I’ll hurl. That worked for Nolan – let’s move on.

The Avengers – May 4, 2012: Everything Marvel has been building up to in their Iron Man movies will lead to this moment. With Captain America: The First Avenger expected to hit theaters some time next year, it will really drive some great momentum for fans leading up to the collaborative Avengers movie where we’ll get to see the entire cast. I hope Downey Jr. and Norton are okay with Chris Evans calling the shots…

Star Trek Sequel – June 29, 2012: JJ Abrams reboot did wonders for the Star Trek films, so it’s no surprise that a sequel is on the horizon.

A lot of movies and a lot of Scifi planned for the movies. It’s a trend that’s not going away anytime soon.

Which of these films are you looking forward to most before a giant meteor hits the earth in 2012?

Brush up on a little Greek mythology to earn some points while you go watch Clash of the Titans this weekend!

If you’re anything like me (and you’re probably considered normal if you aren’t), you’re absolutely looking forward to this weekend. No, not because it’s Easter weekend, but because Clash of the Titans is coming out! I mean what’s more entertaining, a rabbit who gives kids rainbow-colored eggs or Sam Worthington kicking some mythological ass and standing up for us puny humans? If you’re bringing a date to the movie this weekend, and I hope my readers are cool enough to get dates, you can definitely impress her with some of these facts about Greek mythology that will surely score you some points.

Greek Mythology and Clash of the Titans 101

1. Perseus is played by Sam Worthington, the same actor who appeared in the number 1 movie of all time Avatar and in Terminator: Salvation as Marcus.

2. The story behind Clash of the Titans involves Perseus leading a band of men against Hades, ruler of the underworld.

3. Perseus’s father is Zeus, king of the gods, and his mother is Danaë, a human.

4. Perseus in the original myth must defeat the Gorgon Medusa and bring her head as a gift to Polydectes. He would later offer the head to Athena, who places it on Zeus’s shield.

5. The Kraken is a terrible sea monster that is fated to kill Andromeda, Perseus’s future wife.

6. Pegasus is the name of the badass winged horse that Perseus tames at some point in the film.

Now that you’ve had a quick history lesson, it’s time to go enjoy yourself at the movies this weekend! I’m so excited to see how the gods will be portrayed in relation to humans, specifically if they can pull it off without seeming cheesy.

Warner Bros. is getting ready to unleash the Spartans again in 3D! Also, check out what Zack Snyder has to say about working with Frank Miller on the hotly anticipated sequel.

News: Zack Snyder, director of Frank Miller’s epic comic 300 is in talks with Warner Bros. to re-release the movie in 3D. Warner apparently showed Snyder a 10 minute clip that they had converted to the 3D format, and according to the director the full movie could be done soon. Also, Snyder is working on a sequel to the movie and is waiting on all original material from Miller himself.

[source: SuperHeroHype]

Would You See 300 in 3D?

I’m just curious to see how many people would be willing to pay for another ticket to see the same movie in 3D. I know I would be since I rewatch the movie often enough that adding the novelty of 3D would be worth it. How about for you? Avatar was my first 3D movie experience ever, and I’m not ashamed to say that I’d watch anything in that format – as long as it’s a Guy movie. I can’t wait to see how 3D changes the way directors tell their stories onscreen. Can you imagine how great The Hobbit or even a converted Lord of the Rings trilogy would look? Count me in.

300 Sequel Directions

I’ve read a lot recently about the sequel to the 300 movie, and it’s safe to say that no one really knows what to expect. Some have mentioned the 300 live on and battle in Hades while others have suggested the movie will actually be a prequel. I feel that the movie itself was a great launching pad for a movie with a grander scale. Leonidas mentioned that he wanted everyone to know what happened at his last stand, and how few stood against many. Snyder could easily build upon this, take a step back and show how the actions of the 300 Spartans united the Greek nations in repelling the Persian Empire. The last battles of that war are epic in scope and scale, and only that kind of vision will do justice to the more myopic themes touched on in the original film.

300 Apples

For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, here’s on of my favorite spoofs from the 300 movie. Makes me laugh every time I see it.

Where do you think the next film should go? Before you speak, know that at Guy Movie Review everyone, even a king’s messenger, is responsible for the words of his voice. Now, what message do you bring?

Hawaiian actor and model Jason Momoa has been cast as Conan the Barbarian, which isn't sitting too well with fans.

The revamped Conan the Barbarian movie that has been in development limbo at several studios is finally coming together. Lionsgate will be releasing the film domestically, and it looks like they’ve just about finished rounding out the cast. The movie will be directed by Marcus Nispel. Take a look at the list of actors attached so far.

Jason Momoa is Conan the Barbarian

Other Actors

Ron Perlman as Conan’s father

Rose McGowan as an evil witch (and not Red Sonja???)

Rachel Nichols

Stephen Lang

Bob Sapp

Leo Howard

and Said Taghmaoui

Mixed Feelings

The first thing that comes to mind for me when reading about this project is that the casting of Momoa to reprise the role that Arnold made famous is a mistake. But then again, I also questioned Heath Ledger as the Joker when I first heard the news. Momoa, most famous for his Baywatch and Stargate TV shows, could really bulk up if given time. I’ve decided to wait and see before jumping to any conclusions this time and any Conan is better than no Conan at all in my mind.

And while it’s always easy to criticize casting choices, it becomes rather difficult to choose a worthy Conan when you think about it. I’m interested to see who you would have chose as the conquering barbarian if given the opportunity, rather than just screaming “Dear God noooo!!!” like all the other netizens.

Arnold Schwarzenegger the Original Conan

Who would you have chosen to play Conan?

"Rise and rise again. Until lambs become lions." The new Robin Hood trailer starring Russel Crowe looks bloody fantastic.

If you guys have been itching for an action-packed period piece, you’ll be glad to hear that Robin Hood starring Russel Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott has two fantastic trailers out. Scott and Crowe team up following the success of a little movie you might have heard of called Gladiator, one of the best period pieces of all time (okay, so I’m a Scott fanboy). In my opinion, that movie gave rise to many similar epic movies that used the same feel, far different from modern epics like 300 or Clash of the Titans.

The shots look tight, the action is intense and the dialogue seems fitting. Consider me hyped!

Check out the The Wolfman trailer! It looks to be an intense and introspective tale about a man’s battle with his darker self, with plenty of action to boot! The movie boasts an excellent cast, starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins. The Wolfman is directed by Joe Johnston.

Here is a summary of the film from IMDB:

“Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father, Talbot sets out to find his brother… and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe, tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline has come to investigate.”

Sam Worthington is a name you'll be hearing a lot next year. Here's why.

Haven’t heard of Sam Worthington? You will. That’s because this up-and-comer will be one of the hottest actors of the year: screw it, he’ll be the hottest. Remember how Robert Downey Jr. became a household name after Iron Man? Imagine that, but bigger.

Top 5 Reasons Sam Worthington is Here to Stay

Not convinced? Here are 5 reasons you’ll love seeing Worthington next year, and why you’ll continue to see him even more after.

1. He out-acts Christian Bale. It takes a strong actor to outdo Bale in his own film, who has been known to go all out for roles. Especially hot off the success of The Dark Knight. Worthington showed his acting ability by holding his own and then some against Bale and received acclaim for his portrayal of Marcus. Many critics believed he stole the show completely.

2. He has serious acting credentials. Just take a look at Worthington on IMDB and you’ll see a list of some notable films he’s acted in in the past, including Hart’s War. He’s also serious about research, as we heard he sent one of his friends down to the last Comic-Con to check out the latest in intellectual property and movie trends.

3. Clash of the Titans. Move over Harry Hamlin, there’s a new titan in town. Worthington will be starring in a remake of the 1981 classic sans robotic owl, and the trailer looks pretty awesome. By giving himself an opportunity to work with the likes of Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton, Worthington is positioning himself brilliantly among a cast that will refine his abilities.

Clash of the Titans Trailer

4. Looks. Did I have to mention it? No. But let’s face it, looks matter when it comes to building the next big acting machine. My girlfriend took one look at him and was instantly ready to buy tickets to his next movie. Don’t believe me? Just wait till he’s nominated as the next sexiest man of the year.

5. Avatar. That’s one powerful word if you know anything about Hollywood. James Cameron. Those are two more. Worthington may be the luckiest bastard in the world for landing the lead role in the movie many believe will revolutionize the film industry. We’ve already seen other studios gearing up to offer 3-D movies of their own, but nothing will compare to the impact of Cameron’s $400+ million production. Fans of Cameron are highly anticipating his latest offering since Titanic, a movie that will never be beaten at the box office. Ever.

Avatar Extended Trailer

Of course, there’s always a chance that Avatar won’t go well with critics or audiences. The movie could tank, leaving Worthington to rebuild slowly over time. It could happen. Will it? Nope.

Yahoo recently wrote an article on the “Top Five Highest-Grossing Horror Franchises” of all time. Here are the winners in order:
1. FRIDAY THE 13TH
Total Gross: $380,637,525
Average Gross: $31,719,794

2. SAW

3. HALLOWEEN
Total Gross: $307,729,650
Number of Films: 10
Average Gross: $30,772,965

4. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Total Gross: $307,420,075
Number of Films: 8
Average Gross: $38,427,509

5. SCREAM
Total Gross: $293,553,139
Number of Films: 3
Average Gross: $97,851,046

This is all really making me wonder: Who are the people that continue to buy tickets to these awful movies? Most of them are in turbo-remake mode, and receive poor ratings to boot. Unless we vote differently with our wallets, the Hollywood machine will not stop churning out these incredibly bad movies that have only a passing resemblance to the originals.

The Original Horror Films

We all remember why we loved horror films as kids. The special effects blew us away, we were scared and excited at the same time, and there was always a coed willing to take off her sweater despite the fog, strange noises and being in a poorly lit room. Ah the good old days. Today’s films, movies like Final Destination, continue to do well despite poor reviews. Now I’m no Roger Ebert, but this trend is starting to get disturbing. Consider when Michael Bay’s Transformers II opened in theaters this past summer. We were all excited, and admonished critics with our wallet power. But we were wrong. The movie was horrible and deserved every bit of the criticism it received. Outside of the horror genre, movies like Meet the Spartans and others of that ilk continue to be box office draws. God save us.

There’s still hope for me that better horror films would be made. My top 5 horror film list is undecided at this point, but it would most definitely lean more towards movies like The Descent, The Hills Have Eyes, Paranormal Activity and Drag Me to Hell.

Are you one of the people watching today’s scary movies? If so, why?

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson gave up his UFC career and big payday in a risky move into acting - would you do the same?

The new A-Team movie is set to start filming, and sports a quality cast:

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as B.A. Baracus

Liam Neeson as Col. Hannibal Smith

Sharlto Copely as Capt. Murdock

Bradley Cooper as Lt. Faceman Peck

And Jessica Biel as an unknown character

If you look closely enough at the list, the name that should stand out as the oddball of the group is Quinton Jackson, or more commonly known to UFC fans as the howling Rampage. In a well-publicized war of words with UFC President Dana White, Rampage mentioned how important the A-Team was to him growing up, and shared fond memories of watching the classic 80’s show with his father. White however, was less than happy with his former fighter’s forage into acting.

MMA Fighters Going Hollywood

Dana White has stated how much he hates Hollywood and what it’s done to his stable of fighters. Former light heavyweight champion Randy Couture has been busy making movies, and the UFC recently lost another promising upstart, Roger Huerta, to the acting bug. Huerta will be in the upcoming Tekken movie. According to White, agents make big promises that they never intend to keep, but that’s not what’s really bothering him. Rampage was scheduled to fight Rashad Evans in his hometown to end a months long feud when Evans confronted him after a victory of Rashad’s teammate Keith Jardine. He was even featured on the popular television show The Ultimate Fighter as Evans’ opposing coach. This season drew in the most viewers ever as internet street fighting phenom Kimbo Slice joined the series.

Fans aren’t happy with Rampage either. On his official website, Rampage was blasted by fans for pulling out in favor of acting. He insists however, that his real fans will support him and that he has made the UFC a lot more money than they have made him. His only cause for concern is to find a viable way to provide for his family that doesn’t involve him being battered in a cage for a few rounds. Dana White insists that he would happily support Rampage in filming as many movies as he wanted if he just fulfilled his end of the contract and fought Sugar Rashad.

Would You Take the Risk?

It’s not known how much Rampage is making for the A-Team movie, but sources say his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter, payment for his upcoming bout with Rashad and endorsements would have made him significantly more money. He may have also earned a title shot as he was next in line to face current light heavy weight champion Lyoto Machida anyways.

What would you do in Rampage’s situation? Would you take the risk of less pay in pursuit of a better working environment (read: no elbows to the face)?

New Predators Trailer

Adrien Brody is expected to star alongside Topher Grace and Danny Trejo in director Nimrod Antal’s upcoming Predators reboot. Robert Rodriguez is producing, and has mentioned in past interviews that he wants to make this as free from studio control as possible: In other words, a non-studio, studio movie, due out July 9, 2010.

Brody vs. Schwarzenegger

Now if you’re a real guy movie fan, there’s no doubt the original Predator is in your DVD collection and is played at least a few times a year. Or, you watch it every time SpikeTV plays the movie. If you loved the original as much as I do, this is bad news. Brody is no Arnold and his crew looks in no way as badass as the crew Dutch came into the jungle with. Who can forget Mac, Dillon and Billy? Hell, even the skinny white guy with glasses who breaks his back on a log is more manly than Brody. Add to that the fact that Topher Grace is in negotiations to star in the film and you’ve got all the ingredients you need for a suck-fest not seen since the second Aliens vs. Predators movie.

Bad news indeed. If you had a group of intergalactic hunter-aliens on your tail, who would you want on your side, the Pianist or Conan the Barbarian?

Predators Characters

Here is a list of the characters that are supposed to appear according to the Reporter:

Brody is a man who ends up inheriting the mantle of leader and is known as a hunter of men (don’t make me laugh)

Grace would play an accountant-type whose unassuming facade masks a dangerous serial killer (about as menacing as his portrayal of Eddie Brock)

Braga is the tough female killer (tough-female-killer?)

Ali is a man not afraid to die

Goggins is the loose canon of the group

Taktarov is a former Russian special ops agent

Trejo, already cast, is Cuchillo, a hardened warrior with twin uzis strapped to his back

Is it just me or is Danny Trejo getting played out? While the twin uzis sounds interesting, it seems as though Rodriguez is just attempting to build a brand with his ridiculous Machete character. It seems that he’s only thrown in there to add some legitimacy to an otherwise unimpressive cast.

How I Would Remake Predator

No matter how you slice it, Predator is a guy’s movie about the best warriors on earth taking on the best warriors from space. There should be big dudes with big guns, plenty of blood, a great music theme and lots of action. For the main character, my choice would be the Rock – Dwayne Johnson. He’s the only one who can match Arnold’s charisma and build, and he’s also sure to be a box-office draw. The cast from Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables seems much more of a fit for this movie, including Jet Li, Dolph Lungren, former UFC champion Antonio Nogueira, and a few more choice selections.
